Twin piloted, round base, slab base, hex & square, tab base and tube end nuts are the most commonly used variants. 3M disc-retainer nuts securely fasten a fibre disc to 3M disc pad hubs, disc holders or faceplates, using a rotary power tool. These nuts feature 1/4 inch diameter holes to easily fit a spanner wrench for fastening into holes.
There are two types of weld nuts - structural & non-structural. Structural nuts are typically heat-treated, so welding them could use a loss of strength. They comply with A563 Grade C, C3, DH & DH3, A194 Grade 2H, and SAE J995 Grade 5 & 8 standards. Non-structural weld nuts comply with A563 Grade A & SAE J995 Grade 2 standards.
Due to the lack of perforations in their material, welded joints are generally stronger than bolted joints.
Zinc nuts can be welded safely if proper safety guidelines are followed. Nuts must be appropriately prepared, safety equipment must be worn, and adequate ventilation should be ensured.
If you weld a Grade 8 nut, no matter how little heat you use, heating the nut in uncontrolled conditions will weaken it.
